When Your Interior Design Client Is an Interior Designer

Worthington Studio  (Worthington, Ohio)

The Challenge

The client was an interior design studio in need of its own interior restoration. They came to the contractor with a drawn-up plan centered on particular products, but many of the ideas were unworkable (such as a desired 36” vanity cabinet where there was only a 23” space).

Even so, the client was so esthetically focused that it was difficult for the contractor to communicate just how much the building’s structural, mechanical, and spatial realities dictated real-world design limitations. They called us in to listen to the client’s requests, evaluate what was actually achievable, and create a workable plan that included specific products to bid out.

The Resolution

We came in and talked to the client personally, listened a lot, and patiently explained everything. We took her ideas, made many of them work, found alternatives she loved, spelled it all out in our drawings, and got it built.

We specified every individual item, down to the towel racks, toilet paper dispenser, and all the trim pieces. As part of our interior design service, we created a detailed material, equipment, and finish schedule. Ultimately we became priceless to a challenging client.

The average architect would have neither the knowledge nor the patience for this kind of extensive hand-holding. Our difference is our willingness to work with the client to figure things out, accomplish their goals, and then spell everything out in our drawings, no matter how difficult the situation
